Daphne (Haynes) Hamblin was a Latter Day Saint pioneer.

Biography

Daphne Haynes was born on August 19, 1797 in North Hero, Grand Isle County, Vermont, on an island in Lake Champlain. Her parents were William Haynes and Mary Stoddard.

She married Isaiah Hamblin on November 30, 1812 in North Hero. They had twelve children.

Daphne's husband was sent to fight in the War of 1812. When she heard the guns of the battle in which he was wounded, she put her baby, bandages, and medicine into a boat and rowed four to twenty miles (the stories vary in the distance traveled) to the scene of action. She arrived shortly after the battle was over, but arrived in time to see the British flag go down. She was a brave and loyal woman.

Daphne passed away on April 5, 1847 near Council Bluffs, Iowa while they were travelling to Utah with the Mormons. She is buried along the trail in Pottawattamie County with only a crude marker for her grave. There is a memorial to her memory in the Santa Clara Cemetery in Utah where her husband is buried.
