Note N24SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - Harold F. Hays, 90, of 312 Lurgan Ave., died Friday, April 14, 2006, at his home.
Born June 25, 1915, in Chambersburg, Pa., he was the son of the late Ray C. and Etta Strine Hays.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Rose Banks Hays, and his second wife, Alma Burkhart Hays.
He was a 1933 graduate of Chambersburg High School and attended Mercersburg (Pa.) Academy.
He and his brother joined their father in the operation of a men's clothing store, Ray Hays and Sons, in Chambersburg. He retired in 1979.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the 90th Infantry Division.
He was a member of Shippensburg Presbyterian Church and was a former member of Central Presbyterian Church, Chambersburg, where he served as a deacon and trustee.
He was a member of Charles Nitterhouse VFW Post 1599, Shippensburg Historical Society and Oscar M. Hykes American Legion Post 223. He had been a member of Chambersburg County Club. He served on many committees having to do with downtown Chambersburg retail promotions.
He is survived by two stepdaughters, Beth B. Belden of East Berlin, Pa., and Ralma C. Fry of Shippensburg; one stepson, Arthur R. Burkhart III of Ponte Vedra, Fla.; one brother, Ray Hays Jr. of Chambersburg; five grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
He was preceded in death by one son, Edwin Hays.
