Biography

Matilda Hayward was born on June 15, 1819 in Dorset, England. She was the daughter of Robert Hayward and Mary Lambert who lived in Sturminster-Newton. It is assumed that is where she was born, however her baptism took place in Gillingham on July 11. This is likely because it was a Wesleyan baptism.[1]

At the time of the 1841 census she was still living at home with her family[2] but on January 8, 1845 she married Henry Olding.[3] They seem to have had a son, also named Henry, in Sturminster Newton before moving to Chichester in Sussex. They were living there at the time of the 1851 census[4] but it's unknown what happened to both her husband and her son after that. Death records have yet to surface for either one but Matilda is listed as widowed in subsequent records and no other mention is made of children.

The 1861 census shows that after her husband died she went to work as a nurse for the Gibbs family of Chidham also in Sussex.[5] She was still with the family a decade later but in 1871 the Gibbs household was residing in Brighton. Matilda's position has also change from nurse to cook in the intervening years.[6]

By 1881 Matilda had stopped working and had moved back to the town she grew up in, Sturminster Newton. It is not clear why but for some reason her surname had reverted to her maiden name of Hayward.[7] In her later years she shared a home with her sister Elizabeth who had also been a widow for many years.[8]

It is not currently known when Matilda died.
