Mary Ann Hayward was born in Sturminster-Newton, Dorset in 1824. It is assumed she was born around April since her baptism took place on April 25 of that year. She was the daughter of Robert Hayward and Mary Lambert.[1]
On October 1, 1849 she married a grocer named James Strange.[2] Their first son Sydney was born a year later.
