Biography

Birth

James was born in Grimley in 1822 and was christened at Grimley Parish Church on the 10th March that year[1]. His parents are listed as John and Mary Hayward. John is a carpenter. From the christening record of his brothers and sisters, he is the second son and the third child.

Marriage

James married Sarah Pulley on 24th July 1848, at North Littleton, Worcestershire, the village of her birth[2]. There were two witnesses, John Hayward, either James' father or brother, and Mary Pulley. Sarah Pulley died in 1851. They had no children. James is listed as a widower on the 1851 census[3].
James next married Sarah Knowles in 1856 at Shrawley Parish Church[4]. From the marriage certificate there were two witnesses, William Hayward and Elizabeth Knowles; thought to be James' brother and Sarah's sister-in-law (wife of her half-brother William) respectively. Shrawley is a few miles from Grimley.
Although Sarah Knowles was listed as spinster on the marriage certificate, she was actually a widow, having been married to George Slater in 1849 [5]. They had one daughter Sarah Jane Slater[6], who would become known as Sarah Jane Haywood, or just Jane Haywood[7], after Sarah married James in 1856, a year after George's death[8].

Residence and Occupation

James was living in Grimley with the family in 1841[9]. By 1848 he was resident in North Littleton, the time of his marriage to Sarah Pulley[2]. By 1851 he was living in Bretforten[3]. On both dates he is listed as a wheelwright.
By the time of his marriage to Sarah Knowles he was living in Shrawley and is a carpenter following his father[4]. From the birth of their children they appeared to have moved to Little Witley, very near Shrawley and may have moved to Astley and Areley Kings near Stourport, and then Lindridge (see references for children)[10]. Finally they settled in Rock Parish near Pensax where they lived the rest of the lives[11]
James' father, John Hayward (1791-1865), had a carpentry business. However, James did not get involved in this business; instead, it passed to his younger brother John Hayward (1827-1883), who also inherited the business. The story passed to me by my father, James' grandson, was that the two brothers fell out over sharing the business and parted company.

Family

James and Sarah Knowles had four children together. John was born in Little Witley, Worcestershire, 1858[12][13]. Harry was born in Astley, Worcestershire, 1862. William was born in Areley Kings, Worcestershire, 1864. Finally Ruth was born in Lindridge, Worcestershire, 1866[10]. John and Harry would go on to be carpenters. James' step daughter, Sarah Jane, daughter of wife Sarah by a previous marriage, would go on to be a kitchen maid [14].

Death

James died on May 11, 1883, and buried on May 16th[15]. He is buried in Pensax church yard, along with his wife Sarah.

Anomalies

  1. James has a variety of spellings of his surname: both Hayward on christening, some censuses and the will of his father John; and Haywood on his marriage certificate, other censuses and the births of his children. The gravestone says Hayward.
  2. On the 1851 census for Bretforten, Evesham, James is listed as a wheelwright of the correct age, born in Grimley [3]. He is listed as a widower, and there is a visitor/housekeeper Anne Hayward and nephew, Thomas Crane in the same residence. There is an anomaly as on his marriage certificate to Sarah Knowles in 1856, James is listed as a bachelor. Anne Hayward is also listed as being born in Grimley. There is no Anne Hayward christened in Grimley anywhere around that date, but James had a sister, Hannah, of the correct age, who is called Anna on the will of James' and Hannah's father John Hayward written in 1863. So perhaps his sister was looking after him following the death of his first wife. Thomas Crane, listed as nephew, was the son of Thomas Crane and Anne Pulley. However the relationship of Anne Pulley to Sarah Pulley is unclear, they were not sisters, but possibly cousins.
  3. The 1861 census has been transcribed wrongly by Familysearch.org who have Thomas Haywood[7], and SearchAncestry.co.uk who have James Hagwood. Both are online transcription errors as the original written census return says James Haywood.
  4. The christening for their son John in Little Witley parish church has the parents listed as Thomas and Sarah[13]. This is not an online transcription error as it appears in the written parish records. There is no other Hayward of any spelling christened in that parish at or around the birth date so it has been assumed to be a mistake in the register. The preceding entry has a father Thomas. The marriage certificate for the son John Hayward has his father as James. John's actual birth certificate has the parents as James and Sarah.
