Biography

This profile is part of the Fuller Name Study.

Mary Hayward / Hayword / Howard, daughter of William Howard/Hayward and of Tabitha Kinsman, was born in December 1667 in Ipswich, Massachusetts Bay Colony. [1]

Mary Hayward / Hayword, birth
In a couple of published family histories and on-line family trees she is known as Mary Wood, but her birth record gives her name as Mary Hayward, and the other primary source for her full name - the torn marriage record - gives her name as M... ...word, which another published family history tells us is Mary Hayward. In any case, her parents definitely could not have been Isaiah and Mercy (Thompson) Wood, nor could she have been born in 1653. Please See: Research Question
[Jo]seph Fuller & M[ary Hay]word, marriage

Mary married Joseph Fuller in October 1685 in Ipswich, Massachusetts Bay Colony. [2] [3] [4] [5] They had the following known children together:

  1. Joseph Fuller, b. Aug. 13, 1690; m. 1, Bathsheba Hanchett; m. 2, Elizabeth Hutchins;
  2. Thomas Fuller, b. Apr. 6, 1692 ; d. young;
  3. William Fuller, b. Mar. 7, 1694; m. Sarah Waite;
  4. John Fuller, b. May 16, 1698; d. Sept. 29, 1699;
  5. John Fuller, b. Apr. 22, 1701; m.1, Mary Howard ; m.2, Hannah Lord;
  6. Benjamin Fuller, b. Apr. 22, 1701; d. June, 1703;
  7. Daniel Fuller, b. Jan. 30, 1702; m. Anna Doliver;
  8. Benjamin Fuller, b. Aug. 20, 1705; d. July 22, 1722;
  9. Ebeneser Fuller, b. Jan. 10, 1707; m. Mary Gritsman;
  10. Jacob Fuller, b. Mar. 22. 1712; m. Ann Harris.

Daughter Mary Fuller is mentioned in her father William Howard/Hayward's last will and testament dated 23 July 1709, and proved on 1 August 1709. This will definitely proves that Joseph Fuller's wife was Mary Howard/Hayward/Hayword. [6]

William Howard/Hayward, father of Mary (Hayward) Fuller

Mary Hayward/Hayword Fuller passed away before her husband, who died on 22 August 1731.

In Mar., 1692-3, the selectmen of Ipswich set off a lot to Joseph Fuller which he sold to his brother Nathaniel. He was a carpenter by trade. In 1696, he bought of Samuel Bush his Suffield Proprietor's grant. Nov. 1, 1731, William Fuller was appointed administrator of the estate of Joseph Fuller, deceased. No widow mentioned. The administrator reported that "Joseph the eldest son hath acquitted ye estate by an instrument upon record at Springfield, to my satisfaction." The property was divided equally between William, John, Ebenezer, Jacob, and Daniel. Feb. 26, 1742, Ebenezer and Jacob signed receipts for personal property.

Family Histories are as good as their sources, but most are unsourced. They can be trusted only until proven wrong by sources. The errors sometimes contained in family histories are due to information not based upon actually-consulted sources, but rather upon hearsay, oral tradition or someone else's reporting. One can suspect that the author of the above family history, which does not give any source for Joseph Fuller's marriage to a Mary Wood, based his misinformation upon someone else's faulty reading of the original marriage record, which by then was already torn, and only showed M .... word. In a hurry, that could look like M. ... Wood. But in fact, the name is Mary Hayword (variant of Hayward, Howard).

Sources

  1. Ipswich Births, page 181. Text: "Mary Hayward / Hayword, daughter of William, born December 1667."
  2. Ipswich, Massachusetts Vital and Town Records. The image of the partly-torn original reads: "..seph Fuller was married to M....word October [1685]". See Image.
  3. Early Inhabitants of Ipswich, Massachusetts, page 113. Text: "Joseph Fuller married Mary Hayward in October 1685." See image.
  4. New England Marriages prior to 1700, Ancestry.com. Text: " Joseph Fuller & Mary Howard / Hayward / ... word / ... wood, October 1685, Ipswich." All possible readings of Mary's maiden name were included by the transcribers of the torn marriage record. Note: M ... word is what one actually sees on the record. Mary Wood is not a possibility. We know that her maiden name was Hayward from the book Early Inhabitants of Ipswich, Massachusetts, p. 113, which states, that "Joseph Fuller married Mary Hayward October 1685." This author might well have seen the original record before it was torn. Also, according to her birth record she is Mary Hayward, daughter of William, and in her father William Howard's Will she is referred to as daughter Mary Fuller.
  5. Howard Genealogy, p. 11. Information: "Joseph Fuller married Mary Howard/Hayward 17 Oct 1685, Ipswich." Cited in American Genealogist. See Image.
  6. The American Genealogist. Last will and testament of William Howard/Hayward of Ipswich, wherein Daughter Mary Fuller is named as one of the heirs. See Image.
  7. This marriage information is based upon a misreading of the torn original marriage record which in fact reads: "..seph Fuller was married to M.... word October [1685]". The history Early Inhabitants of Ipswich, Massachusetts, page 113, states: "Joseph [Fuller]1 son John1 married Mary Hayward October 1685", which corresponds perfectly with the now torn, original marriage record, supplying the missing letters. The author must have seen the original marriage record before it was torn. - Fuller-5187 - 21 June 2021
  8. That Simon Wood was brother of his wife is conjecture a posteriori , that is, first of all presuming that Mary Wood was Joseph's wife, which she wasn't, and then thinking that Simon Wood must have been Joseph's brother-in-law.
  9. The birthdate of the real Mary Wood - 1653 - was much too early for Joseph's wife, who would have been impossibly old to be having children with him from 1690 till 1712, i.e. from 37 till 59 years of age! Joseph's true wife, Mary Hayward, on the other hand, was more likely born abt. 1665 - 1667, which is fact is proven by 1) Mary Hayward's birth record, 1667, Ipswich, and 2) William Howard/Hayward's will, wherein Daughter Mary Fuller is named. - Fuller-5187

Profile History & Acknowledgements

Whitney Rappas originally created WikiTree profile Wood-30981 on 16 May 2019, as a duplicate of the older profile Wood-29441. On 20 June 2021 Albertus adopted Wood-30981 and changed the incorrect maiden name Wood to Hayward, thus creating the present profile Hayward-5538, which then became a duplicate of Howard-9511. On 22 June 2021 Derrick Watson merged Howard-9511 into Hayward-5538, deferring to the name Mary Hayward found on her birth record.

Thank you for changing the name for Mary. I was taking too long to search further "the why" the Fuller Book stating Mary's name was Wood and Anderson's Great Migration Bio of John Fuller Joseph's Father also stating Mary's name Wood. Up till now I haven't been able to find any Hayword or Hayward parents but will continue on.

You're welcome Katherine. Family Histories often contain errors, when imformation is not based upon actually consulted sources, but rather upon hearsay, oral tradition or someone else's reporting of the sources. I suspect that the two family histories that you name, which donot give any source for Joseph Fuller's marriage to a Mary Wood, based ther assumption upon some third party's having read the original marriage record, which by then was already torn, and only showed M .... word. In a hurry, that could look like M. ... Wood. At least they guessed the name Mary correctly, though they could have known her given name from other sources. I would guess that both family histories made use of the same third party for the marriage information. The rest of the information on the false bride Mary Wood - her date of birth and parents - followed. What gives away that Mary Wood could not have been Joseph Fuller's wife - besides that fact that the real Mary Wood was married to Edward Ordway and still having children at the time of Joseph Fuller's marriage in 1685 - is that the birthdate of the real Mary Wood - 1653 - was much too early for Joseph's wife, who would have been impossibly old to be having children with him from 1690 till 1712, i.e. from 37 till 59 years of age! Postscriptum: I have found Mary's parents!!!! William Howard/Hayward and Tabitha Kinsman. Have attached them. There is a duplicate profile for Mary Howard/Hayward Fuller which will have to be merged: i have proposed the merge.
Katherine, look at Mary's profile again: i found an interesting transcription of the marriage record at Ancestry.com. They transcribe the name as either Mary Howard or Mary Hayward. Also found a birth record for Mary Hayword/Hayward daughter of William. And i found her father's will, in which Wiliam Howard/Hayward names daughter Mary Fuller as one of the heirs.
Some thoughts about Joseph Fuller's Wife in question

I found this book online [Early Inhabitants of Ipswich, Mass. 1633-1700] https://archive.org/stream/earlyinhabitants13hamm#page/223/mode/1up - which lists Joseph Fuller's marriage to a Mary Hayward Oct 1685. Also, "Massachusetts, Town Clerk, Vital and Town Records, 1626-2001," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QG1K-M7HL : 2 March 2020), Joseph Fuller and M* *Word, Oct 1685; citing Marriage, Joseph's marriage to a M. ___word. The Image is torn but might be Hayword?

Katherine, yes, i think that you are right about Mary Fuller's maiden name being Hayward or Hayword. Certainly not Wood. Please see this research note: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Wood-29441#Reseach_Question

Since your Joseph Fuller was married to Mary Hayward (as the marriage records testify), then perhaps it were best to change this profile's maiden name at birth to Hayward, with Hayword as alternative spelling, and then try to search for Mary Hayward's parents. I think that we are now very near the truth of the whole matter!

There has to be 2 Mary Woods somewhere.?? We have one Mary Wood marrying (Ordway) in Newbury, MA 1678 and another Mary Wood marrying (Fuller) in Ipswich, MA 1686 [when she was having children with the husband she married 1678 ??]

It has been established by reliable sources and by the dates of the childrens' births that there are indeed 2 different Mary Woods; which is why Wood-30981 and Wood-29441 cannot and must not be merged. I cannot explain why there are two daughters of the same parents both named Mary and both born on the same day. One of them is not the daughter of Isaiah Wood, and one of them was most likely not born on 31 Oct 1653.

Wood-30981 and Wood-29441 should not be merged because: They cannot be one and the same person due to different husbands and children. Her children by Edward Ordway were born during the supposed other marriage to Fuller. The newer profile Wood-30981 should not have been attached to the parents of the older profile Wood-29441. They are two different persons with the same name who have been conflated. The parents and husband of Mary Wood Ordway are documented, and leave no doubt. She could not have been married to two men at the same time. See also the relevant information at the profiles of Mary's mother Thompson-5267, father Wood-6458 and husband Ordway-159, which all show Ordway to be Mary's only husband.
