Biography

Early Life

Matthias Hayward[1] was born in Sturminster-Newton, Dorset, England to Robert Hayward and Mary Lambert. He was likely born in December of 1826 or January of 1827 as his baptism took place on January 14, 1827. [2]

Census records indicate that his father worked as a cooper,[3] a trade that Matthias seems to have inherited.[4] At the time of the 1841 census he was 14 and living with his parents and three siblings[5] but by the time of the 1851 census he had married and was working as a cooper in Poole. [4]

First Marriage

On July 28, 1846 Matthias married Anna Maria Rose. They had a daughter named Pricilla in 1848,[6] a son named Robert in 1849,[7] and another daughter named Susan in 1851.[8]

Immigration

It is not known when Matthias left England but sometime between the 1851 census and the 1861 census he immigrated to Newfoundland. Anna Maria and the daughters were left behind but their son Robert also ended up in Newfoundland. It is not clear whether they traveled together or whether one went first and the other followed. Both father and son settled in the town of Twillingate.

Second Marriage

On December 2, 1869 Matthias married his second wife Rachel Mitchard at the Wesleyan Mission House in Twillingate.[9] The only witness listed is William Hodder.

Death

Matthias spent the rest of his life in Twillingate, Newfoundland where he died of cancer on April 20, 1902.[10] In his will he left most of his property to his son Robert Hayward and grandson Edwin Hayward, though some money and personal items were also left to other grandchildren and friends.[11]
