Research Notes

The source for the birth of James is a book in the library of the Society of Genealogists in London. This is a reproduction of a translation (from Latin) made in 1920 from the original register of the Roman Catholic Parish of Worksop Manor. This includes an entry showing the baptism on 11th March 1818 of James Heywood Holmes, son of William Holmes and Sarah (Heywood). The sponsors were James and Elizabeth Hobson. Another entry shows the baptism on 18th October 1824 of Elizabeth, daughter of George May and ... (Haywood). Elizabeth Hobson was again a sponsor (and perhaps the source of the child's forename). In between, the register also shows a marriage on 7th October 1821 of Robert Haywood and Sarah Holmes, presumably siblings of Sarah and William.

It seems unlikely that William Holmes and Sarah Heywood were married, as Sarah married George May as Sarah Haywood, and James never used his Holmes surname and appeared to have been told about a fictitious John Haywood as his father (see his marriage certificate).
It seems to be difficult to trace Haywoods and Holmes much further back in parish records, because they were Catholics who did not get baptised in the CofE parish church. But it is very likely that Sarah Haywood was the daughter of Sarah Haywood(nee Yates) aged 29 of the parish of Cuckney, the wife of Robert Haywood, who was buried in Carlton in Lindrick on 29th October 1793, presumably deceased because of childbirth problems. Robert Haywood lived long enough to be recorded in the 1841 census as a baker in Norton Cuckney. Anne Hayward buried in Carlton in Lindrick in 1794 aged 63 may have been Robert's mother. William Holmes may have been a son of George and Martha Holmes whose unnamed child was buried in Norton Cuckney in 1789.
In his will dated 25/5/1870, George May (of Brancliffe in South Anston Yorkshire, farmer) bequeathed two annuities (£20 to his niece and housekeeper Elizabeth Hatfield, £100 to his wife), a life interest in the income from his investments and real estate to his daughter Elizabeth (wife of Henry Salmon, cattle dealer of Letwell Yorkshire), and the capital to be shared equally among her children following her death. The will was proved by his nephew George David Jarvis, grocer of Tickhill Yorkshire, at Nottingham District Registry on 31/1/1873, the effects being valued under £5000 with no leaseholds. So no benefit passed to the descendants of George May's deceased stepson, James Haywood. But the two branches of the descendants of Sarah Haywood were still in touch in the 1880s and 1890s, as reported by her great-great-grandson John Hawkins from Australia in 2011: "I have attached a photo of Elizabeth SALMON (née MAY), daughter of Sarah MAY (née HEYWOOD) .... She should be a half sister of James accordingly. I have photos of two of her children Sarah Sophia and George Alfred - my grandmother Elizabeth Heywood NICHOLSON was their elder sister) taken in Cardiff around 1880 when they must have been visiting. My mother used to refer to a family cousin, Charlie HEYWOOD, and I found a news clipping in an old family scrapbook of his daughter Sophia's wedding in 1896 listing all her siblings."
