Biography

English flag
John Haywood was born in England.

John was born on 9 October 1844 in Bovey Tracey, Devon, England [1] to John Haywood and Eliza (Lock) Haywood. He first appears with his family on the 1851 UK census, aged 6, and by the time of the 1861 census (when he was aged 16) he is working as a brickmaker.

John married Johanna Murch in 1869 [2] in the Congregational chapel in Ottery St Mary, Devon, witnessed by a Jane Page from North London. When Johanna died in 1875, he remarried, to Eliza Neubutt Pope. [3] When Eliza died in 1902, John married again - to Jane Page, witness to his first marriage! [4]

John and Johanna had three children: Edmund John, Samuel Murch (Johanna's maiden name was Murch), and Ernest. Ernest was only 9 days old when Johanna died from complications after the birth [5]. Children from John's other two marriages have yet to be found.

By the 1881 census, now married to Eliza and a brick moulder, John is living in St Mary's Cottage, Bovey Tracey. However, for the next twenty-some years, John rises to become the manager of the nearby South Down brickworks, and moves to live in Maker, then Millbrook, Cornwall.

John died in 1918, aged 74, grandfather of nineteen. [6]
