Biography

The son of Harry Haywood and Mary (Nelson) Haywood, Floyd was born in Salem Michigan in 1904. His mother died when he was three years old, passing away on January 22, 1907 after giving birth to a stillborn infant on January 21st His father remarried in April of that year, marrying Cora (Whitman) Haywood in 1909. There were two children born to that marriage, Floyd's half-siblings:

  1. Harry Lee (1908-1973)
  2. Albert (1911-1917)

According to the 1910 census, neither Floyd nor any of his siblings lived in his father's household after he moved to Ypsilanti in 1910; the only children in the household of Harry and Cora were their son, Harry Lee, and Cora's young children from her previous marriage, Ellen (10), Catherine (8), Mary (6), and Earl (5) Carroll. Floyd and his older brother, George, were sent to live with their cousin, Eugene Nelson, in Salem, Michigan.[1] Floyd continued to live and work on his cousin's farm through the 1920s[2] and into 1930.[3]

Floyd did not marry. He eventually moved further north, to Antrim County, Michigan, where he, along with another hired man, worked on Maud Thumm's farm.[4] He passed away in 1961 and is buried at Vanderbilt Cemetery in Vanderbilt, Michigan.[5]

Research Notes

It appears that Floyd's father and Cora divorced, as Harry Haywood married again, marrying Edith (Cornell) Haywood in Toledo on August 8, 1914, and that there are other half-siblings and step-siblings. Edith's last name was "Brown" when they married.
