Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Lancaster Hazelwood was a South Carolina colonist.

Lancaster Hazelwood, a son of Thomas Hazelwood and Mary Lancaster, was born on 14 Feb 1768 in North Carolina,[1][2] most likely in Bute County, where his father was listed as a resident in the early tax lists.[3] His surname is found with the spellings Haselwood, Haslewood, Hazelwood, and even Hailwood.

Around 1786, he married Dorcas Warwick.[1][2] It is not clear how long they may have stayed in North Carolina, but they moved to Union County, South Carolina, after his father moved there. Most, if not all, of the children of Lancaster and Dorcas Hazelwood were born in Union County, South Carolina. Here are some, perhaps not all, of their children:[4][2][1]

  1. William (1787-1863)
  2. Nancy (1788-1860)
  3. Sarah "Sally" (1793-1875)
  4. Rhoda (1795-1861)
  5. Thomas (1797-1856)
  6. Elizabeth (1799-1860)
  7. Celia "Sealy" (1800-1860)
  8. John Henry (1803-1900)
  9. Warrick (1805-1870)
  10. Isaac (1810-1880)
  11. Masiah (1827-1912
  12. Mary (?-?)

As his father's only son and heir, Lancaster inherited all of his father's land and continued to live in Union County, for his lifetime. He is found in the U.S. Federal Census for 1810,[5] 1820,[6] 1830,[7] 1840,[8] and 1850.[9] In his final years, daughter Nancy was living with him, just the two of them.

He passed away on 18 Sep 1854 at the age of 86 in Union County, South Carolina.[1][2] He died intestate; the estate papers are available.[10]
