Biography

Surname

Frederick Lambert's notebooks about Cabell and Wayne County (West) Virginia families, found in Special Collections at Marshall University Library contain the comment: Hazlett was Irish. The name was originally spelled O'Hazlett. [1]

Birth

Robert Hazlett's birth date is based on the the approximate date of his marriage as well as the fact he was a son of Moses Hazlett and his first wife (name unknown). The fact Moses was his father was gleaned from a biography of Robert's grandson Henry Newman that was published in Hardesty's History of West Virginia[2] stating Moses came from Dublin, Ireland, fought in the Revolutionary War, and had three sons and one daughter (as shown by the 1786 census for Surry County, NC). "Robin" Hazlett is listed in the 1786 census for Surry County, NC, in the same district as Moses Hazlett.[3] The 1790 census for Stokes County, North Carolina [1] lists the following "Hazle" (sic Hazlett) households:

Hazle Moses 3 1 4 0 0
Hazle Robert 1 4 3 0 0
Hazle Kindler 1 0 3 0 0

Marriage

Robert Hazlet married Jean Patton about 1781 presumably in North Carolina but thus far no proof has been found. The fact his wife's name was "Jean" was shown in his estate papers.

Military

Anne Waller Reddy lists a Robert Hazlett as a non-military "patriot" of the Rev. War from Berkeley County, Virginia.[4]Robert Hazlett came from Ireland and settled in North Carolina before the Revolutionary War. Chandler Hazlett, his brother, was a soldier in the Revolution. He was wounded at the battle of Bunker Hill.

Property

Robert Hazlett owned property on Red (sic Reed) Creek in Stokes Co NC when his land was mentioned as a boundary in 1784 and 1796.

On 16 Aug 1784 he was mentioned as a boundary for the land of Nathaniel and Nancy Watson of Surry Co NC who were selling 300 acres on Red Creek to William Ashert of Surry Co NC.[5]

Twelve years later, 9 Sep 1796 Robert Heazlet's property on Reeds Cr was mention as a boundary for the NC Grant of 200 acres on Reeds Creek the north side of the Dan River to Peter Yarrell.[6]
