Undated extract, presumed to be from Terang "Express" newspaper: INTERESTING CAREER OF FORMER TERANG RESIDENT Late Mr Claud Head
The late Mr Claud Head, whose sudden death at his mome in Kyarra Road, Gardiner, was reported recently in the "Express" was the elder son of the late Mr and Mrs W.B.Head of Terang. He was a native of this town and was in his fifty-fifth year at the time of his death. He commenced his career in the Terang office of Messrs Doyle and Kerr, and while there he enlisted in ther A.I.F. shortly after the outbreak of the Great War of 1914-18. He took part in the landing at Gallipoli and during the Gallipoli campaign he was wounded. Some time after his return to Australia he was employed in the office of the Trufood Company at Glenormiston.
Later he joined the staff of Hemmingway and Robertson, accountance coaches, and served in both their Melbourne and Sydney branches. Returning from Sydney, he became accountant and secretary of the Great Southern Co-operative Company, at Foster in Gippsland - a position which he occupied for a number of years. When he severed his connection with the company at Foster, he became accountant with Smith and McEachern, solicitors of Melbounre, and later with J.V.McEachern and Son, when the original firm dissolved the partnership.
In his early days in Terang Mr Head was a keen footballer and tennis player. He was also a member of the choir of the Thomson Memorial Church.
During the whole of his residence at Gardiner he was closely associated with the Gardiner Presbyterian Church. He was church secretary and Sunday school teacher, and later became an elder. During the recent war he was a keen and enthusiastic member of the Volunteer Defence Corps. Actuated always by a keen sense of duty, whatever responsibilities he undertook (and they were many) were always faithfully and thoroughly carried out.
He leaves a widow, who before her marriage was Miss Joy Ferguson, and a daughter (Naomi Joy). Mr Ralph Head, of Yallourne, is a brother, and sisters are Ethel (Mrs P. Robson, Sydney), Winnie (Mrs W. Brookman, Burnie Tasmania), Daisy (Mrs J. McCullough, Glen Iris), Eva (Mrs Sloan, Mortlake), and Olive (Mrs Baxter, Oakleigh).
The funeral was held at the Burwood cemetery. The coffin and hearse were covered with beautiful floral tributes. Services were conducted at the house and the graveside by the Rev. J.E.Owen.
