“William Head. In the name of God Amen I William Head of the county of Surry and State of North Carolina do this day make this my last will and testament in matter and form as follows. 1st I give and bequeath unto my wife, Sarah Head, all my personal and real estate to her use during her life or widowhood and at her death or marriage to be divided as follows to wit: 1st I give my daughter Elizabeth one shilling, 2nd to Abraham one shilling, 3rd to George one shilling, 4th to Judy one shilling, 5th James one shilling, 6th to Rachel one shilling, 7th to Benjamin one shilling , 8th to Fanny one shilling, 9th to Sally one shilling. The balance left it is my will that my daughter Patsy first have our good bed and furniture and then to be equal after with my other eight children herself the 9th. My will is after the above that all the residue of my land and personal estate after paying my just debts be equally divided among my nine children by sale or otherwise among themselves without cost to wit.   7. When Esq was entered after a name in a colonial document it was to denote a man of "higher status". Not gentry per se but of means and property above the common man.
  8. The inferred date is misleading. William Head died some time after 28 Sep 1839 and before Feb 1840.
