Biography

Philip Healy was born on 26th of January in 1864 in Listrim, County Kerry, a townland that lies between Ardfert and the Spa. [1] His parents were Maurice Healy and Nora Moore Healy. The family had a farm in Listrim.
Philip had an older brother John “Maurice” Healy who married Bridget Harty of Liscurrig, Causeway. Maurice inherited the farm in Listrim. He and Bridget had four children one of whom (Philip) died as a child, leaving Maurice, Jack and Chrissie. Jack left the farm to John Healy, son of Florence Healy.
Other siblings of Philip Healy were Thomas Healy, Margaret Healy Dillane and Mary Healy O’Sullivan.[2]

The Healys of Listrim

According to tradition the Healy family were stone masons who came from Cork to build Ballyheigue Castle for the Crosbie family. In return they received land in Listrim which was divided among their descendants.

Philip Healy married Bridget O’Sullivan of Ballybroman

Philip Healy married Bridget “Bidsie” O’Sullivan of Ballybroman, the daughter of Florence O’Sullivan and Kit McCarthy O’Sullivan. Philip and Bridget were married in Abbeydorney Church on the 27th of February 1897.[3]

Ballygrenan, Listowel

In the 1901 Census the family have acquired the farm at Ballygrenan, Listowel. Philip describes himself as a farmer but the words “cattle gobber” have been added to the returns document which presumably means “cattle dealer.” In the census they record that they employed 4 men described as farm servants and 3 women as domestic servants at Ballygrenan. [4] In the 1911 census Phiip Healy now describes himself as farmer, magistrate and member of the County Council. There are now 3 men and 3 women employed.
