Biography

Nellie (Healey) Kingsley was born in the Colony of Victoria (1851-1900)

Mary was born on 4 February 1867 at Five Mile Station, near Sunbury, Victoria, Australia to parents William Healey and Mary Clark. ^[1][2]

She married George Kingsley on 17 April 1895 at Booth Street, Golden Square, Bendigo, Victoria, Australia. She was 28 years of age at the time. ^[2] Mary Ellen (or Nellie as she was known) and George had three children, William George Claude (b 1896), Stanley Gordon (b 1898) and Nellie Irene (b 1901).

Ellen was a teacher in the Bible Christian Sunday School in Mckenzie Street, Bendigo. ^[3] About 3 to 4 months after the birth of her third child, Nellie Irene Kingsley, she became ill. Her condition worsened in January 1902 ^[4] She was admitted to the Lunatic ward of the Bendigo hospital on 25th January 1902, with what was then called "Religious mania with a tendency to melancholy". Her behaviour was described as "somewhat violent" and she was placed in a straight jacket and a padded cell. ^{[3] [4]}

Ellen died 3 days later, on the 28 January 1902. An inquest into her death found that she died from pnumeonia, or "inflammation of the lungs" ^{[5] [4]} She was buried on 30 January 1902 at Bendigo Remembrance Park, Monumental, Monumental N5, Monumental Grave 16827, Bendigo, Victoria, Australia. ^[3][6]

Mary Ellen,s birth record gives her name as Mary, while the marriage record gives her name as Mary Ellen and her death record gives her name as Mary Ellen (Kingsley). References at her death inquest refers to her as Nellie or Ellen. Her three children have her name as Mary Ellen on their BDM Victoria birth records. ^[6]
