Thomas Heaphy was born on April 2, 1813 in London, England, son of Thomas Heaphy (1775–1835) and Mary Stevenson (~1780–1827).

He was born on the 2nd April 1813 in Alpha Cottages, Marylebone, London and christened on the 15th June 1813 in the parish of St. Mary, Marylebone, London.

At an early period,Thomas assumed the additional christian name ‘Frank,’ with the view of thereby distinguishing his works from those of his father, but dropped it before 1850.
