Richard Heath was the fourth child of Andrew and Magdalene Heath. He was born in Delaware Twp., Hunterdon Co., New Jersey.
According to James P. Snell's History of Hunterdon and Somerset County and likely based on family tradition, Andrew feeling Richard was too young to serve, took his place in 1777 during the American Revolution. It is said that Andrew died after drinking a quantity of cold water and buttermilk after a long hot march to confront the Tories in a skirmish.
In the war, Richard served under Captains Ely, Schenck, Stout, Phillips, Gearhart, and Hoppock. He participated in the gathering of boats along the Delaware in preparation for the Battle of Trenton.
Richard married Catherine Rittenhouse and they had ten children.
