Biography

Flag of County Durham (adopted 2013)
George Heatherington was born in County Durham, England.

George Heatherington was baptised at St. John's Chapel, Weardale, on 20 May 1725 and was the son of Cuthbert Heatherington.[1]

George married Mary Gibson in the parish of Stanhope on 19 May 1763 and they had four children who were born in St. John's Chapel, Weardale, County Durham, which is a small village situated on the south side of the River Wear.[2]

The village grew up around the church of St. John the Baptist and was built to serve the Bishop of Durham on his hunts through the Weardale forest in the 15th century. From the mid 18th century, the main industry was from the lead mines and the population began to grow as more families moved into the area. The current population is just over 300 and its unspoiled beauty has made it popular with cyclists and hikers.
