Bertha's middle name Boyd was after her maternal grandmother Rachel Harned Boyd.
Bertha received her BA from Dalhousie University in 1896. She was reputedly the first woman from Lunenburg County to graduate from Dalhousie. She also obtained her MA from Dalhousie.
Bertha and her husband taught school in South Africa. On returning home, lived with widowed father. Built a new house on his property on Victoria Road in Bridgewater and took down original house. On father's death in 1935, inherited property.
