Catherine Hebert was born around 1662 in Port-Royal, Acadie, Nouvelle-France. Her parents were Étienne Hébert and Marie Gaudet.[1]
Catherine was listed in the first census of Port-Royal in 1671 at the age of 9 in her widowed mother's household,[2] and again in 1678 at the age of 18 with her mother and her 2nd husband Dominique Gareau.[3]
She married Philippe Pinet, before the census of 1678.[1] Together they had 12 children.
In 1678 the young couple had settled in Port-Royal and posessed 1 cow and 4 acres of land. No children were listed yet.[4]
The 1686 census shows that they had moved to Les Mines. Catherine HEBERT, aged 24, was living with her husband, Philippe PINET, aged 32, and their four children: Jean, aged 6, Antoine, aged 4, Noel, aged 3, and Marie, aged 1. They owned 2 guns and were living on 8 arpents of cultivable land with 12 cattle and 15 hogs.[5]
They continued to raise their family at Les Mines.[6][7][8][9].
Philippe passed away some time before 1710.
Catherine never remarried. She decided to settle in Port Toulouse, Île Royale (present day Cape Breton), with her children and worked as a gardener. She possibly arrived there in 1714 aboard "La Sonde", and she and her children received the King's ration for 1 year.
She was enumerated there in 1714[10], 1717[11], 1719[1][12], 1724 [13] and 1726[14]and was referred to as "La veuve Pinet".
Catherine died on 3 August 1727 in Louisbourg, Acadie, Nouvelle-France.[15]
