Biography

PAUL HEBERT is on the Wall of Names at the Acadian Memorial in St. Martinville, Louisiana, Plaque 3 Right. Listed with him is his wife, Marguerite Melanson, and their children: Anne, Ignace, Marie, Jean Baptiste, Amand, Marguerite and Paul. Also listed is an orpheline, Marie Blanchard.[1]

Paul Hebert was born in 1712, a son of Guillaume Hebert and Marie Dupuis. He was baptized the day after his birth at Saint Charles des Mines in Grand-Pré, Acadie. His godparents were Jacques Hebert and Cecile Dupuis [2][3]

When he was 24, Paul married Marguerite Josephe Melancon, age 18, daughter of Philippe Melanson and Marie Dugas, on 14 May 1736 at Saint Charles des Mines, Grand-Pré, Acadie. [4][3]

His known children were:
  1. Pierre Paul Hebert (1737 - 1806)
  2. Joseph Hebert (~1740 - 1799)
  3. Charles Hebert (1741 - 1806)
  4. Marie Magdeline (Hebert) Hébert (1743 - 1815)
  5. Anne Marie Hebert (1745 - ~1825)
  6. Ignace Hebert (1747 - ~1790)
  7. Marie Hebert (1749 - )
  8. Jean Baptiste Hebert (c.1751)
  9. Amant Valery Hebert (>1753 - 1817)
  10. Antoine Hebert (>1756 - <1767)
  11. Paul Hebert (>1758 - <1796)
  12. Marguerite Hebert (1760 - 1846)

On 5 September 1755, Paul was imprisoned along with hundreds of other Acadian men at the St. Charles des Mines church in Grand-Pré. On a list of prisoners, he was said to live in the village des Michel (Hébert) (now Avonport, Nova Scotia) with 7 sons and 3 daughters (spouses were not included on the list), and owned 4 bullocks, 7 cows, 17 young cattle, 40 sheep, and 15 hogs. His property and livestock became forfeit to the crown, and his family was required to prepare for deportation within 30 days. [5][6]

On 27 October 1755, Paul, Marguerite-Josèphe and their children (Joseph, Charles, Ignace, Jean-Baptiste, Amand, Antoine, Marie-Madeleine, Anne-Marie, Marie, and an unnamed son) were deported to Maryland aboard the Ranger. [6] They were detained there until the end of the war in 1763. That year, the family was listed on a census in Georgetown, Maryland. [7][8]

With no home to return to, they accepted the Spanish government's offer to Acadian refugees to homestead Spain's newly-acquired Louisiana territory. They were counted soon after their arrival on 27 July 1767 in New Orleans, Louisiana. Jean Baptist was 16.[9] A few weeks later they had arrived at their allotted land in St. Gabriel, Louisiana. He was included on the "List of the Acadian Families That Have Come to Establish Themselves in This Province of Louisiana, and an Account of Their Belongings," as Juan Bauptista, age 16 years.[10]

Paul Hebert died in 1805 and was buried at St. Gabriel Catholic Church, Iberville, Louisiana.[11]

Can anyone document where the Gaston comes from?
posted by Stephanie Ward
KTR has it on her page for him. But none of her many sources have the word Gaston. The handritten transcription of the baptism and marriage dont have it, neither do the typed DOBR entries. The Maryland census does have him and the family, only as Paul, no Gaston. No Gaston at all in that census (so not a mixup) and it was an uncommon name in those times. A search in Gregory Woods book produces no Gaston but it does have this Paul Hebert. The only Paul Gaston Hebert found in Landry was born in 1796, so no confusion there. How about we delete the Gaston? Cindy

I agree, the only places I see the name of Gaston are in the proliferation of online trees, with no sources to back it up. I'm good with deleting it.
I like the middle name Gaston! I'm keeping it on my tree. And it is used in Gregory Woods' book "Acadians in Maryland" on page 131. Since he shows up five times in my family tree, does that give me any more say so?!

Hi, Van, how about this - since it hasn't been documented yet (I thought I found a link and scanned for Gaston but now I can not find a link). You seem to have the book and can see it on page 131. Could you edit the citation to show the complete entry Wood includes for Paul Hebert? Or a photo or screenshot if that would do the job better? No one has said they don't like the name Gaston, we are looking for if it is documented. So far, not any luck except for your source from Wood. We are discussing, collaborating, with no intent to offend you - you are a valued member of the team! Cindy

Van, I agree with Cindy. All we need is a citation showing the name was used in records. I still don't think it should be used as a middle name, but I'm good with putting it in the Other Nicknames field.
