Jean Baptiste Hebert, son of Jean Pierre Hebert of Acadia and Anne Dorothee Doiron of France, was born 3 December 1786 in St. Gabriel, Louisiana. His baptism took place 28 January 1787 in St. Gabriel.[1]
Jean Baptiste married Anne Melanie Landry on 8 September 1808 in St. Gabriel, Louisiana.[2]
Jean Baptiste died sometime before 25 July 1831, when his widow remarried,[4]
possibly in 1823, in Iberville Parish, Louisiana,[5]
but possibly even before 18 January 1820, in Opelousas, Louisiana.[6]

Research Notes
There are apparently conflicting records about the death and succession of Jean Baptiste Hebert. The succession records indicate his death in or before early 1820, which is in conflict with the births of the last two children assigned to him above. However, all of the children's baptism records have the same grandparents with only slight variations. They certainly seem to all be children of this couple.
- HEBERT, Jean Baptiste Heirs. wid. is Melanie LANDRY who re-married in 1831 to Alexandre L'ENCLOS. Succ. dated May 1839 (Opel. Ct. Hse.: Succ. #913)
- HEBERT, Jean Baptiste wid. is Melanie LANDRY Children: Valcin; Melanie; Jean Baptiste fils. Succ. dated March 1839 (Opel. Ct. Hse.: Succ. # 919)
Note that the 1820 succession only lists 2 children as heirs: Joseph Valsin and Marie Melanie. No baptism record by these names has been found for either of these children. In addition, the children we do have baptism records for are not mentioned as heirs, even though we know that at least some of them survived to 1820 [Marie Adveline m. 1827; Anne Aspasie m. 1831; J.B. m. 1835]. The 1839 succession doesn't shed any new light, other than it mentions another child, Jean Baptiste fils, for whom we have a baptism record, and also mentions his wife's remarriage.
A death record in Iberville Parish might be for him, but it doesn't identify any relationships to tie him to this man. However it does align well with the birth of the last apparent child in 1823.

So... is it possible that ALL of these documents are about the same man? Could the 1820 succession actually be a document drawn up prior to his death, such as a will? Why are not all the children mentioned then? Are the two "extra" children in the 1820 and 1839 successions actually name variations for children already listed above? We should get a copy of the original succession documents to verify what they actually contain, and to see if they can answer these questions. [[[Bjorkgren-1|Bjorkgren-1]] 21:18, 13 June 2021 (UTC)]

Thanks Elizabeth. In addition, this man lived in Iberville Parish and the 1820 succession record is from Opelousas, St. Landry Parish. His widow remarried in Iberville Parish.
Legitimate heirs of Jean Baptiste Hebert are listed in his sister's succession (Marie Reine) on 28 Jan 1828 in the WBR Courthouse. They are: Aime Asphasie, Marie Adveline, Eugene, Jean Baptiste, Valaire, and Wassain Joseph.
I doubt that his death was the one mentioned in 1823. He would have been 37, not 33 as mentioned in the burial information.
Aime Asphasie married on 25 Jul 1831 to Alexandre Rivet. Jean Baptiste is listed as deceased in the marriage record.
Wassain Joseph was born in 1821 so I doubt that the succession mentioned above in 1820 is the correct Jean Baptiste Hebert unless he died while she was pregnant which is possible. However, there are more heirs than is what is mentioned in that succession.
Unfortunately, Jean Baptiste Hebert is a very common name and it is difficult to tell which one is correct. Adding to that is the fact is the confusion with the wife's name being the same.
