JEAN BAPTISTE HEBERT is on the Wall of Names at the Acadian Memorial in St. Martinville, Louisiana, on Plaque 3-Right. Listed with him are three young cousins, Joseph Pepin, Louise, and Jean Charles Hebert.[1]
Jean Charles Hebert, dit Manuel, son of Benoni Hebert and Jeanne Savoie, was born in Acadie about 1750. His parents and four children were listed as prisoners at Fort Edward, then Halifax in 1763.[2]
As he was twelve or thirteen in 1763, he would have been one of those children. His parents died soon after, either there or possibly in Haiti, during their immigration. Most of the Acadian immigrants continued on from there to Louisiana.
We know Jean Charles came to Louisiana from Halifax with the Beausoleil party, because in 1766 he was counted on a census at the age of fifteen in St. James, Louisiana, with an uncle and aunt who were early Acadian arrivals also listed, but not with him, on the Wall of Names.[3]
He married Magdeleine Robichaux, daughter of deceased Rene Robichaud and Marguerite Martin, in St. Martinville, Louisiana in 1773.[4][5]
Known children of the marriage (7 of whom survived him, from the list of heirs):
He was a patriot who fought with the Louisiana Militia during the American Revolutionary War.[7]
Jean Charles Hebert is listed as a fusilier in the Attakapas District militia, on May 1, 1777. Jean Charles participated in the Battle of Baton Rouge on September 21, 1779 and was under the command of Governor Bernardo de Galvez. He also participated in Governor de Galvez's campaigns against the British-held forts in Mobile, Alabama and Pensacola, Florida.[8]
He died in Lafayette, Louisiana on 23 October 1830.[7][9]
