Biography

Jean Clairfe Hebert, son of Desire Hebert and Marie Elmire Breaux, was born on 21 November 1862 in St. Landry Parish, Louisiana, United States. He was probably baptized at Grand Coteau.[1] Clairfe was enumerated during the 1870 and 1880 censuses with his parents and siblings, living on their farm in Lafayette Parish, Louisiana.[2][3]

He and Marie Angele Comeaux, daughter of Hyppolite Comeaux and Lesima Richard, applied for a marriage license on 9 January 1884 in Lafayette,[4] and were married on 17 January 1884 in Carencro, Lafayette Parish.[5]

He and Marie Emelia Rivette, daughter of Joseph Rivette and Emelia Cormier, applied for a marriage license on 26 January 1886 in Lafayette.[6][7] They were married a few days later on 1 February 1886 in Carencro, Lafayette Parish.[8]

Children of Clairfe and Emelia were:

  1. Mary Angela Hebert (1886 - )
  2. Mary Olivia Hebert (1888 - 1968)
  3. Emelia Hebert (1889 - bef.1900)
  4. Mary Blanche Hebert (1891 - 1959)
  5. Marie Rose Hebert (1892 - 1894)
  6. Joseph Treville Hebert (1895 - 1945)
  7. Joseph Adam Hebert (1897 - )
  8. Marie Evia Hebert (1900 - )

The family was enumerated during the 1900 census on a farm which they owned free and clear in St. Landry Parish. His wife was the only family member who could read, write, and speak English.[9]

He was widowed in November 1906.[10]

He was enumerated in St. Landry Parish with his children during the 1910 census. He owned his farm free and clear. Only his sons Trevel and Adam could speak English.[11] By 1918 they were living in Grand Coteau, St. Landry Parish.[12]

Jean Clairfe Hebert died on 9 April 1935, and was buried at St. Charles Borromeo Church cemetery in Grand Coteau, St. Landry Parish.[13]
