Biography

Hans Georg Hechler was born April 14, 1708 in Birlenbach, N. Alsace to Jacob Hechler and Margaretha[1], and died ca. 1773 in York County Pennsylvania. He married Susanna Haul. She died ca. 1790 in Bedford Co. PA.

They went to Manchester Twp. York Co., PA in Sept. 1761. He owned land with son John Martin in 1761 and sold farm to son George.

Birth

Date: 1708-04-14
Place: Birlenbach, Northern Alsace, France

1754 Immigration

Hans Georg paid the manumission for the freedom to emigrate to the Lord of the land whom Hans Georg and his family were tied to in 1754. This record only lists 'with 5 children' and no mention of a wife (Weib or Frau) is made. "Hechler, Görg, von Ingolsheim (Kr. Weißenburg, Els. {Weissenburg District, Alsace}) mit seinen 5 Kindern. 1754. (Georg Hechler, 30. Sept. 1754, Schiff Neptune)."[2] NOTE: Dr. Krebs specifically states that the ship records were taken from "des Werkes von Hinke-Straßburger" which has a direct link below, so we see that the ship Neptune in Dr. Krebs' paper has added a complication to the immigration information. The Neptune's list (see Page 620+ of same link below) shows NO Hechlers on List A, Georg (X) Hechler on List B and Georg Hechler on List C. No other Hechlers noted and no ages given on any of the lists.

Below is noted by most family researchers as the immigration for this Hans Georg Hechler. More research into Martin Hechler may prove this one way or another. Hans Georg's Find A Grave memorial specifically states "There were seven people in Hans Georg Hechler's family, himself, his wife, Susanna, their sons (1)Martin age 19, (2)George age 11, (3)Jacob and two daughters, (4)Elizabeth and (5)Barbara." No source given or located as of Jan 2022 for this information. However this certainly fits with both the manumission on the number of children and with the continuations of those children's American records found below.

Hans Georg and his family sailed from Rotterdam, Netherlands to Cowes, England and arrived on the "Barclay" in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on Sept. 14, 1754. List 'A' (Males 16 and older) shows Hans Yerr Eygler (Age 46/B.~1708) and Martin Heighler (Age 19/B.~1735). List 'C' shows H. George Hechler and Martin Hechler.[3][4]

Death

Date: 1773-04-30
Place: Manchester Township, York, Pennsylvania, USA

George Heck{h}ler's probate inventory in Manchester Township is listed as in 1774.[5] On 31 Jan 1774, "...Letters of Administration with a copy of an english Translation of Will in the German Language annexed were Granted to Jacob Hechler of the Estate of George Hechler late of York County Yeoman Deceased...".[6] In the 06 Jun 1775 Court, "Came into Court Jacob Hechler Executor of the Last Will and Testament of George Hechler Deceased and produced the Account of his Administration on the Estate of the Said Testator."[7]

There are additional notes at Hans Georg's Find A Grave memorial[8]. While no photo is available for his gravestone, his burial listed at Quickel Lutheran Church[9] Cemetery conforms with all other known information.
