Biography

Paul Heckel was born about 1833 in the German Empire.[1] His parents have not been proven.

He is believed to be the Paul Heckl, age 21, who arrived in Baltimore, Maryland, 19 Aug 1854 on a ship departing from Bremen, Germany. His place of origin is listed as Kaitenbach, with Cincinnati, Ohio, listed as his destination.[2] Cincinnati is not far from Ripley County, Indiana, where Paul's future wife was living with her family before relocating to Pierce County, Wisconsin, sometime before 1860.

Civil War Service:

Paul Heckel enlisted in the Union Army on 3 Mar 1965. He is listed as a resident of Martel, Pierce, Wisconsin, and served as a private in the 50th Regiment Wisconsin Infantry, Company G. He was mustered out 14 Jun 1866[3][4] and received a pension for his service 30 Dec 1872.[5] He is buried with a Civil War military headstone.[6]

Marriage & Children:

He married Josephine Sepp before 1865. She was the daughter of John Sepp and Anna Barbara Weser of Pierce County, Wisconsin. The year of their marriage is estimated based on the ages of their children in the 1870 Ellsworth, Pierce, Wisconsin, census which lists: Paul Hochol (36), Josephine (23), John (5), Mary (3), Josephine (1).[7] Her maiden name is also listed in some of the death records of her children.

They were parents of the following children found in census records:

  1. John
  2. Mary
  3. Josephine Emma
  4. Joseph
  5. William F
  6. Barbara
  7. Angeline
  8. Alice
  9. Frank

He last appears in the 1880 Ellsworth census.[8] His widow and most of his children continued to live in Ellsworth following his death. However, some of his family eventually moved to the State of Washington.

Paul Heckel died 14 Dec 1888 in Ellsworth, Pierce, Wisconsin, and is buried in Lost Creek Cemetery, El Paso.[1]

Notes

From the 1854 ship manifest which may represent this Paul Heckel, his place of origin is listed as Kaitenbach. The Meyers Gazetteer does not contain an exact match for this location. However, using a soundex match supplies some possibilities.[9]
