Biography

English flag
Anna (Heckleton) Wood has English ancestors.

LNAB: Hackleton, based on birth father's name. Name variations:
FN: Johanna/Anna/Hanna/Henne
LN:Heglington/Hackleton/Hacklinton/ Heckleton/Richleton[sic]/Heckliton

Est. birth: c. 1661-1663 in Hartford, Connecticut -or- Northampton, Massachusetts. Johanna was the second child of Joanna (Hannah) Wakeman and Francis Hackleton, her older brother William was born c. 1658-1662. No birth records for Johanna have been located. Most records refer to her as Anna Hackleton or similar variants.

In 1665, Anna's mother, under her married name Hannah Hackleton, was imprisoned for over one year in Hartford, Connecticut, for crimes resulting from a brief extramarital affair. During this time, it is generally believed the child, about 2 years old, lived with her maternal family in Connecticut. There is no clear record of Anna's father after early 1665. It is thought he may have abandoned his family or died prior to 1667[1].

In 1667, Anna was brought to New Netherland by her mother where they lived in the household of Edward Whittaker on Hussey Hill, Esopus (which later became Kingston, New York). In 1672, he became her legal step-father. Whittaker was not particularly kind and often threatened Anna and abused her mother during Anna's childhood[2].

Anna married John Wood of Marbletown on 12 Jan 1682. A recent widower, he originated from Derbyshire, England[3].

  • Margriet bp 28 Jan 1683 p18 #302; (md Pieter van Luwen 30 Jun 1700 p516 #160)
  • John (II) bp 20 Sept 1685 p24 #427 - d. bef. 01 May 1751;[5] (married Hanna Ward daughter of John Ward and Sarah Loveridge)
  • Timothy bd unk, prob. aft. 1685-bef 1698. d. aft. 01 May 1751. (John Wood (II) mentions sibling Timothy in his will dated 1750, proved 1751.)[5]
  • Eduward bp 15 May 1698 p53 #1037; (md Susanna Schut 17 June 1722 p541 #479)
All but Timothy are recorded at Kingston Reformed Dutch Church.[6] It is likely there were also other children. From John II's bp, Sep 1685 until Eduward's bp, May 1698 Kingston, Kingston Church records show no mention of Anna or her husband. Then, a second gap occurs until 1723. More research needed.

Marriage:

Name: Anna Johanna Hackleton/Hacklinton
Gender: Female
Birth Date: 1658
Birth Place: Hartford, Hartford, Connecticut
Father: Francis Hackleton
Mother: Joanna Wakeman
Spouse: John Wood
Children: Edward Wood [7]

On 03 Sept 1694 when Anna Hackleton's step-father Edward Whittaker wrote his will, Whittaker left £20 to be divided for "my Wives Daughters Children" (i.e. wife's daughter's children), but her children are not listed by name and Anna is not mentioned as an heir.[8] This suggests that Anna may have been estranged from her stepfather before the birth of her children.

Anna's son Eduward/Edward, baptized 15 May 1698, is likely named for her younger half-brother Eduwart/Edward, not her step-father per se as British naming conventions of the era would have placed the name higher on the list (barring the loss of an earlier born son with the name Edward).

On 12 May 1723 Anna, recorded as Henne Heckliton, and her spouse Jan Woed witnessed the baptism of their grandson Jan Woed son of Eduwerd Woed and his wife Zusanna Schott in Kingston, p146 #3116.

Believed to have died between 1723 and 1750. No provisions for her care are mentioned in her oldest son John's 1750 will.[5] No death records have been located for Johanna/Anna/Hanna (Hackleton) Wood.
