George was born in 1836 in Hobart to George Perkins and Fanny Doyle[1].
He took the surname 'Hedger' when his mother Fanny partnered John Hedger in Hobart and they had a family - George was effectively raised in this Hedger family.
He married[2] the American-born step-daughter of Amos Crisp who came to NSW with Amos Crisp when he returned to NSW from a period in the USA to avoid police prosecution in NSW; John Hedger had helped Amos Crisp secure passage (escape) from NSW/Tasmania - Amos Crisp and John Hedger had been transported from England on the same ship to NSW, the 'Ocean' in 1815.
George Hedger passed away in Manly in 1912[3] and is buried in Manly cemetery.
His Obituary in the 'Manly Daily' claimed he was the/an inspiration for the poem 'The Man From Snowy River'.
