Jabez was a Draper living at Highworth when his daughter Sarah Whitfield Hedges was baptised in October 1818. Sadly she died aged just 10 years in 1829.
The inscription on his gravestone at Highworth reads: "To the Memory of / Jabez Hedges / who departed this life / Nov the 26 1830 / Aged 35 years / Also of Sarah / Daughter of / Jabez and Sarah Hedges / who departed this life / Jun the 12 1830 / Aged 10"
Jabez left a Will. IN THE NAME OF GOD AMEN I Jabez HEDGES of Highworth in the County of Wilts Draper being of sound and disposing mind memory and understanding and considering the uncertainty of life do make my last Will and Testament in manner following that is to say I Give and Bequeath to my wife Sarah HEDGES as long as she shall remain a widow my freehold dwelling house situated in Highworth aforesaid also all my personal Effects whatsoever to layout and invest the same after payment thereout of my just debts for the benefit of herself and my children Elizabeth, William, Robert Ann, …………, Sarah, Thomas and Rosetta ………… I do nominate my wife Sarah HEDGES, John Cook SALMON and Thomas PARROT Executrix and Executors of this my last Will and Testament and I declare that the receipt ……… of my Executrix and Executors or the survivor of them shall be a good and sufficient discharge to the purchaser of the freehold house herein mentioned that is if it be necessary to the support and maintenance of herself and my children herein named to sell the same I do further will and Ordain that if my said Wife Sarah HEDGES marry again the Executors before named do take possession of the whole of the property herein mentioned and layout and invest the same for the maintenance and support of my children also that if she do not marry again after her death whatever property shall be left shall be equally divided amongst my children or their heirs my Executrix and Executors shall neither be charged or chargeable with or from any property other than such as shall actually come to her or either of their hands by virtue of this my Will now with any loss or damage which shall happen in or about the execution of all or any of the Trusts aforesaid without her or either of their wilful default In Witness whereof I the said Jabez HEDGES the Testator have hereunto set my hand and seal this 16th day of May in the year of our Lord 1830 Jabez Hedges Signed Sealed Published and Declared by the said Jabez HEDGES the Testator as and for his last Will and Testament in the presence of us who in his presence at his request and in the presence of each other have subscribed out names as witnesses John HEDGES John PHIPPS Ephraim HEDGES PROVED at London 6th May 1831 before the Worshipful John ?? Doctor of Laws and Surrogate by the Oaths of Sarah HEDGES Widow the Relict one of the Executors who whom administration was granted having been first sworn duly to administer power reserved of making the grant to John Cook SALMON and Thomas PARROT the other Executors when they or either of them shall apply for the same PROVED at London 25 August 1837 before the Judge by the Oath of John Cook the other and surviving Executor to whom administration was granted having first sworn by commission duly to administer.
