Biography

Jonathan was born in Mercer County, Pennsylvania to George Hedglin and Martha McDowell March 22, 1880. Per the 1880 census, the family called East Lackawannock, Pennsylvania home.

On December 26, 1902 the 22 year old laborer married 16 year old Nora Ellen May Pernett. By 1910, the family had grown to include 3 sons: Lawrence, Clarence, and David. Jonathan was working as a hotel porter to support his family. Sadly, Lawrence died on June 23, 1910 from diphtheria.

September 1918, Jonathan registered for the draft. It doesn't appear that he was actually part of the armed conflict in WWI. On his draft card, he listed his occupation as a farmer.

By the 1920 census, he was working as a coal miner. The family had also grown since 1910, daughters Rosaline, Mildred, Stella and a son Grant were living in the family home in Irwin, Pennsylvania along with David who was 12 at the time of the census.

Little is known about the family between 1920 and 1942. It appears that Jonathan was either widowed or divorced when he registered for the WWII draft. He lists a Mrs. Mildred Knaff as his closest relative to contact (she might have been a daughter) and lists Stoneboro, Pennsylvania as his home town. He was working for the WPA in Pennsylvania.

Jonathan died April 11, 1957. He is buried in Mount Irwin Cemetery in Barkeyville, Pennsylvania, sharing a headstone with his granddaughter Betty Knauff.
