It is possible that she emigrated to Sydney, New South Wales before 1841 and was educated there. She emigrated to New Zealand (still trying to find the ship), possibly in 1851 as she had lived five years in the Hutt when she married.

She married William Read Welch on 9 October 1856[2] (the intention to marry was dated 6 October[3]) at Christ Church, Taita. They had nine children.

  1. William Edward (1857 - 1933)
  2. George Henry (1859 - 1906)
  3. Arthur Wellesley (1862 - 1871)
  4. Laura Ann (1864 - 1903)
  5. Frederick Percy (1866 - 1932)
  6. Ernest Alfred (1867 - 1935)
  7. Maurice Whitewood (1970 -1950)
  8. Arabella (1871-1928)
  9. Ada (1874 - 1931)

Sarah was an woman of great fortitude who contributed much to the community in Taita[4]. She led the Sewing Union, which was the main source of funds for Christ Church, Taita. She had the misfortune to lose her son Arthur in 1871 when he was killed by a horse while staying in the Wairarapa. Then her mother-in-law Ann Welch died in 1879, and her husband William became mentally unwell. He committed suicide in 1881. She continued to live in Laurel Hall and looked after her father-in-law William and her children. When her daughters died, she took in her grandchildren.
