Biography

Peter Heglin (spelled Hӧglund in birth record but spelling changed to Heglin on immigration) was born in 1855 in Overbyn, Ovansjӧ, Gävleborg, Sweden to Hans Hӧglund and Brita Eliasdotter aka Anderson. Peter left Sweden with his parents and brothers in 1869 to immigrate to the United States. He grew up on his father's farm at Dalesburg, Clay County, South Dakota. Peter was a homesteader in Lincoln County, South Dakota when he married Sophia Sundström in 1880. He sold his homestead land to his brother John and moved his family to Dalesburg in Clay County where he bought a farm in the 1880s. Peter and Sophia had 11 children together, two of whom died as infants. Sophia died in 1898, leaving Peter with a young family to care for. The two youngest of their children went to live with relatives.

In 1902 Peter remarried to Christine Lundquist who had also been born in Sweden. Peter and Christine moved to a homestead in Canada, near what was to become Trossachs, Saskatchewan, a village in the Weyburn district. Peter Heglin is said to have moved the first building into Trossachs and had a pioneer supply business there.[1] Peter Heglin owned NW 16-7-16-W2 in Saskatchewan according to the Western Land Grants database at Library and Archives Canada. He received patent on this land in Nov, 1906.[2] Peter and Christine had 5 children together before she, like his first wife, died at a young age in 1913. Their youngest daughter, only 3 weeks old when her mother died, was adopted by neighbours.

Peter remained on the farm at Trossachs but frequently visited family members in South Dakota. It was on such a visit to one of his adult sons that he died suddenly in 1917. [3] He left 14 surviving children behind. Peter is buried in Brokenshell Cemetery, Trossachs, Saskatchewan, Canada beside his second wife.

  2. The Saskatchewan Homestead file for Peter Heglin (File consulted July 2008 at the Saskatchewan Archives in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada) indicates that his homestead entrance was filed in Nov. 17-18, 1902 when he came to Weyburn. He built a house (36'x26') worth $450.00 on the land in 1905 but there was one there as early as April, 1903.
  3. Obituary The Beresford Republic Thursday, May 31, 1917 "Peter Heglin passed away at the home of his son, Ed Heglin, in southwest Beresford, last Saturday after a short illness, and after funeral services were held on Monday the remains were shipped to Canada in charge of David Heglin, now of Sioux City, there to be laid beside those of his wife. Mr. Heglin was born in Sweden June 30, 1855. He came to America in 1869, and after living for two years in Canada he settled in Clay County, where he resided until the spring of 1902 when he removed to Canada. He was first married to Miss Sophia Sundstrom in 1899, and after her death to Christine Lundquist, who also preceded him to the great beyond. He came to town last week, with a pain in one limb, which was not thought to be serious, but later the trouble went to his heart, and death resulted in a short time. Mr. Heglin is survived by fourteen children. These are: Fred and Oscar, in Canada; Edward, Beresford; Mrs. John Williamson of Racine, Wisconsin; Henry of Washington; Elmer "Soderstrom", of Beresford, Ethel, Clifford, Violet, Raymond and Edith, all in Canada. He is also survived by two brothers, John, now of Canada, and Fred, of Clay county. The bereaved ones have the sympathy of all in their hour of bereavement."
