Biography

Frederick Henry Heiden (known as Fred) was born 29 Jan 1894 [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] in Toledo, Lucas County, Ohio, [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] to immigrant parents, William T Heiden [1] [2] [4] [5] [6] and Bertha Kansorka Heiden. [1] [2] [4] [5] [6]

Fred was listed by his middle name of Henry, [7] and as being born in Jan 1894 ,[7] in the 1900 United States Census [7]. He was living with his parents, William and Bertha [7], and siblings [7]; Emil, Herman, William, Anna, Alma and Minnie. The family residence was: 84 Plumer Street, Port Lawrence Township, Precinct F, Ward 6, in Toledo, Lucas County, Ohio. [7] Port Lawrence was an area known in the city as occupied by immigrants. During this period, the city kept track of immigrants by Wards and Precincts and retained cards on all immigrant families and their whereabouts.

In the 1910 United States Census [8] Fred was again, listed by his middle name of Henry and his age given was 17. [8] He worked for the Railroad, [8] and lived with his parents William [8] and Bertha, [8] and siblings: [8] Herman, Alma, Minnie, Annie and Harold. The family residence was: 84 Plumer Street, Ward 12, in Toledo, Lucas County, Ohio. [8]

On June 5th 1917 [3] , Fred signed and returned his United States Draft [3] card for World War I. At the time of the return, he lived at 107 W Plumer Street (GoogleMap) in Toledo, Ohio [3] and was employed by the Railroad as a pipe fitter. [3]

Fred was only 23 years old[6] and just five days shy from his 24th birthday, on January 24th 1918[6] , when he married single mother Hazel Ryno[6] at Detroit [6], in her home state of Michigan [6] (they were later divorced). Fred listed his occupation as plumber [6], his residence as Toledo, Ohio [6], and his parents as William [6]and Bertha [6] on his marriage license. [6]

During World War I, on April 4th 1918 [9], Fred enlisted with American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) [9] as a Private [9], for two and a half years [9], and was assigned to Company B, 39th Ohio Engineers. [9] He was honorably discharged in June 1919. [9]

At the time of the 1920 United States Census, [10] Fred was listed as age 26 [10] and divorced [10] . He still worked for the Railroad [10] , and was living with his parents William[10] and Bertha[10] , and siblings Anna [10] and Harold. [10] Also living in the household was a single female boarder, born in New York, named Ora Spink , age 22. [10] The family residence was located at 107 W Plumer Street (GoogleMap), Ward 14, Toledo, Lucas County, Ohio. [10]

On March 21st 1929, Fred's father, William, who worked at Ford [11] Plate Glass, was accidentally run over by a coworker and met a tragic death [12] while crossing Miami Street in Toledo.

Fred became the stepfather of Evelyn Prock. when he married [13] her 30 year old mother, Mrs. Lucille S Prock [13] on June 30th 1930 [13]. His new wife, Susan, as she was known, was divorced in 1927 [13] from the child's father, Andrew Prock. Susan was the daughter of John Rebar and Sophie Kilner Rebar. [13] Fred and Susan were married in Cuyahoga County, Ohio. [13] On his marriage application, Fred listed his residence as, 3558 W 129th Street, Cleveland, Ohio, [13] his place of birth as, Toledo, Ohio, [13] occupation as salesman, [13] and his parents as William Heiden [13] and Bertha Kansorka. [13]

Fred and Susan were married nearly 20 years at the time of his death. Fred died at age 56, in the VA Hospital [4] at Cleveland , Ohio, [4] on March 16th 1950. [4] Susan never remarried.
