Hiles Y DNA Project

About us:

Our Hiles Project hopes to join our variant surnames into one big family through scientific DNA testing and grouping.

Many of us have chosen DNA testing to help connect/reconnect with our family or family history. The Y-DNA and mtDNA marker tests are STR tests. These tests do an awesome job of pointing to our larger genetic family because STRs suggest relationships1. However, "SNPs are at the very heart of genetic genealogy on family a level. SNPs define family trees."2

Test as many markers as you can to begin and plan to test SNPs as they become available! We can't wait to find new relationships and family lines!

Backgound:

Our Hiles Surname Project was created in the hope of finding links to our family line(s), and to discover how we fit together with each other.

Our surname can mean "health, happiness, prosperity 1, luck and fortune 2. " Any person who exemplified these attributes could have been surnamed "Heil ", just as the nickname '"Heil" [was used] for "Heinrich" in Dutch and North German and could have been elevated to the surname. 3

Here are some of the imaginative ways our surname has been spelled 4 and misspelled in documents thru the centuries: Diles, Haehl, Haehle, Hael, Hailman, Hales, Hayal, Hayl, Hayle, Hayles, Heel, Heell, Heellin 5, Hehl, Heil, Heile, Heiler, Heilin, Heill, Heillman(n), Heilman(n), Heilner, Heiltz, Heldner, Helen, Helin, Hell, Hellen, Heller, Helles, Hellessor, Hellin, Helyne, Heyel, Heyl, Heyle, Heylen, Heylin, Heylman(n), Heyler, Heyll, Heyly, Heylyn, Heylyne, Heyt, Hial, Hile, Hileman, Hiler, Hiles, Hilese, Hiley, Hill, Hille, Hilles, Hills, Hils, Hiltz, Hoel, Hoell, Hohl, Hoil, Hoile, Hoiles, Hoill, Hole, Holes, Holey, Holl, Holles, Hoy, Hoye, Hoyal, Hoyh, Hoyl, Hoyle, Hoyls, Hoyt, Huyler, Hyle, Hylen, Hylin, Hyline, Hyler, Hyles, Ile, Iles, Ills, Kiles, Skiles

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:
