Queensland separated from the Colony of New South Wales as a self-governing Crown colony in 1859. In 1901 it became one of the six founding states of Australia. The Hamburg immigrant ship arrived on 14th of March, without charts, and there was no lighthouse to mark the shoals. The Captain attempted to enter the Bay, got into difficulty, and was forced to beach the ship to prevent loss of life. Passengers were not classed by the authorities as "arrived" until the 30th, after processing.
