Biography

Mary Hymes, born December 10,1780 in Frederick County Maryland, was the daughter of Lorenz and Christina Heim/Hymes. She was baptized January 14, 1781 in the Evangelical Lutheran church of Middletown, Frederick County Maryland.

She married Richard Ridgley on August 28, 1798. She remained at home in Frederick County Maryland with her young children while Richard fought in the War of 1812.

She and Richard and their family moved to Ohio in 1822, where they lived until April 1839, when they emigrated to Illinois, settled in Lawrence County, and were counted as residents in the 1840 census. The couple had at least twelve children who were alive when Richard wrote his Will.

After her husband Richard Ridgley died in 1863, his wife Mary lived with her younger son, John Laurence Ridgley and his family in Lukin. Her age is given as 99 in 1870 census although this is probably incorrect based on her birthdate.

Mary was allowed a pension for Richard’s military service on her application executed September 26, 1871. At that time, she was residing in Lukin Township, Lawrence County Illinois, (Post Office Summer, Il.)

Mary Heim/ Hymes passed away on February 2, 1873, and was laid to rest beside her husband at Ridgley Cemetery in Lukin Township, Lawrence County Illinois at the age of 94 years.

Mary was born in 1780. She died in 1873 at the age of 92.
