Biography

Frederick was born in 1857 in Eden, Erie County, New York, the son of Jean-George Heinrich and Salome Wohlhuter. He grew up on the family farm there, and also continued farming as an adult. At age 22 in about 1879, he married Louisa Caroline Haushalter, whose brother had married Fred's older sister Mary. The couple stayed on the farm of Fred's parents. Louisa died in 1885, without having had any children. Fred remarried to Maria Catherine Bauer in 1886. They settled to farm on Creek Road in Eden. Fred's niece Mary C. Henry stayed with them as a child and she and her husband then lived with them on the farm after she married. Fred and Maria never had children of their own. Fred took his own life in 1923, apparently depressed over poor health. He is buried together with his wives, parents and other family members in St. Paul's Lutheran Church Cemetery in Eden.

Fred Henry.
There occurred at Eden Valley, March 25th, the death of Fred Henry, beloved husband of Maria Henry (nee Bauer), brother of George, Daniel and William Henry, Mrs. M. Arlin, Mrs. George Householder, Mrs. Caroline Heiser. Funeral was held from the family residence Wednesday afternoon, at 1:30 p.m., and from St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran church at 2 o'clock. The services were attended by a large number of friends, who extend the most sincere sympathy to the bereaved family.

Surname Note

The original family surnames were Heinrich and anglicized to Henry after coming to America. However, after adopting Henry for many years, the family appears to have reverted to using Heinrich in the 1870's. Henry was used in the 1850, 1855, 1860, 1865 censuses, but 'Henrich' was used in the 1875 census.
