Biography

Mathias Heinrich was likely born to Nikolaus Heinrich and Elisabeth[1] about 2 Feb 1807[2] in Grand-duché de Bade, Confédération du Rhin[3][4].

He married Catharina Margaretha Wallewein[5] on 16 May 1833 at Evangelische Kirche Gaiberg in Großherzogtum Baden, Deutscher Bund.[1]

Mathias immigrated to the United States of America with his wife and children, departing from Le Havre, France on the ship Poland and arriving at the port of New York City, New York on 6 Aug 1836.[3]

He lived in Mascoutah, Illinois.[6][4][7]

He was a farmer[8][6] and grocer[4][7].

Mathias Heinrich likely died about 14 May 1866 in St Clair County, Illinois.[5][2] He is buried at Schneblin Cemetery in Mascoutah.[2]

Research Notes

On Mathias' headstone photo, the month and day of his birth were listed as Feb. 2, but the last digit of his birth year was unreadable (180?) in the image. Based on the number of years of age listed on his headstone (59) and his known death month/year of May 1866, his birth date has been estimated at 2 Feb 1807.[2]

Gaiberg baptismal records indicate that Mathias was the father of at least 2 children with Catharina Margaretha[9][10] before his marriage to her was formalized in 1833[1].

On Mathias' headstone photo, the month and year of his death were listed as May 1866, but the day of month was unreadable in the image. Based on the number of days of age listed on his headstone (12), his death date has been estimated at 14 May 1866.[2] This is consistent with his probate record source which indicated that he made his will on 1 May 1866 and that the will was proven in court on 15 May 1866.[5]
