Andrew Heiskell was "chairman and CEO of Time Inc. (1960–1980), and also known for his philanthropy, for organizations including the New York Public Library. He was President of the Inter American Press Association (1961–1962)."[1]
"In 1946, aged just 30, he was named publisher of Life; later, as CEO, he had to close it down (in 1972). In 1974 he created People, which rapidly became a great asset. The Institute of International Education's Andrew Heiskell Award is named for him. Heiskell donated funds to pay for the Arts Director position at the American Academy in Rome."[2]
Andrew was born 13 September 1915 in Naples, Italy, the son of Morgan Heiskell and Anna Hubbard.[3] [4][5]
He was married three times. His first wife was Cornelia Scott, with whom he had two children. They were married 12 November 1937 in New York City.[6] Andrew and Cornelia divorced 26 August 1950 in Gooding, Idaho.[7]
He married the actress Madeleine Carroll 1 September 1950 in Baltimore, Maryland. They were the parents of a daughter. This marriage was rather secretive; however, when Andrew Heiskell filed for divorce, he stated that the couple had been married 1 September 1950 in Baltimore. "Stamford, Conn., September 30 (AP)--Madeleine Carroll was sued for divorce today by her husband, Andrew Heiskell of Darien, chairman of the board of Time, Inc. In papers filed in Stamford Superior Court, Mr. Heiskell based his action on allegations of intolerable cruelty and desertion. They were married Sept. 1, 1950 in Baltimore. He alleges that the actress deserted him in March, 1961. Mr. Heiskell is suing for custody and visitation rights of a minor child, Anne Madeleine Heiskell. The actress was reported residing in a New York City Hotel."[8]
On 30 January 1965, he married his third wife, Marian Sulzberger Dryfoos, the widow of New York Times publisher Orvil Dryfoos, in Manhattan.[9]
He passed away 10 July 2003 in Darien, Connecticut at the age of 87.[10][11]
