The Chancellor's Grammar School in Exeter Street having disappeared at the time of the Reformation, it was re-founded in the Close in 1554, at first in a " ruined mansion " near the Palace, but five years later at Braybroke House, its present quarters. There have been 31 Headmasters in 384 years, an average of 12 years each. But from 1673 to 1756, a period of 83 years, there were only two Headmasters, Edward Hardwick for 23 years, and Richard Hele for 50. Under these two men, the School became famous, and this fame, in spite of a short lapse, was maintained until the end of Dr. Skinner's regime in 1801. It has been possible definitely to identify the careers of all except five or six of these men. -1706. Richard Hele. (Heale) s. Ric, of Sarum Wilts, pleb.
