Biography

Andrew W. "Andy" Hellinger, the son of Henry Hellinger and Eva Schmidt, was born on 10 February 1860 in Leef Township, Madison County, Illinois.

Andrew was counted in the 1870 US Census of Grant Fork, Madison County, Illinois, as a member of Henry Hellinger's household. The household included Henry (40), Eva (35), Theresa (16), Henry (13), Charles (12), Andrew (10), John (7), and Christian (2). [1]

Andy married Mary R. Liebler on November 13, 1883 in Pocahontas, Bond County, Illinois. [2]
Together, they had at least eight children:

Andrew was a 24 year old farmer in Leef Township, Madison County when his first child, Rose, was born on August 29, 1884. [3] [4] [5]

Andy was counted as a coal miner in the June 1900 census of Trenton, Clinton County, Illinois.
The household consisted of Andy (40), Mary (35), Rose (15), Henry (14), Minnie (12), Ida, (10), Ella (6), William (3), and Albert (2). [6] (See Research Notes below for full details)

In June 1908, Andrew was mentioned as a surviving son in the obituaries of Henry Hellinger. [7] [8]

Andrew, of Edwardsville, Madison County, Illinois, was mentioned as a surviving brother of John Hellinger in an obituary on November 29, 1911. [9]

On March 1, 1915 Andrew was named as the appraiser of estate of Andrew Peter Jurgenson. [10]

Andy may have been the "Andrew Hellinger" who was a pall-bearer at the funeral of Joseph Cobine on October 17, 1915. Deceased and all pall-bearers were members of the Carpenters Local No. 378 [11]

Andrew and Mary were residents of Edwardsville, Madison County, Illinois when they were mentioned as a surviving son & wife in the obituaries of Eva Hellinger. [12]

In January, 1916 Andrew was chosen as "satchem" of Oquaka Tribe, No. 155, Improved Order of Red Men [13]

In April of 1919 Andrew was a member of a committee from United Mineworkers Local 820 chosen to purchase property for a union hall [14]

On July 9, 1919 Andrew was listed as having personal property worth $50 and real property worth $400 in assessments of Edwardsville, Township 4 Range 8 [15]

Andy was counted as a coal miner in the January 1920 census of Edwardsville, Madison County, Illinois, living at 431 S. Buchanan.

Jan 19 1921: Andrew was listed as 1 of 4 announced "Citizens party" candidates for alderman of Edwardsville [17]

"Lot Numbered Fourteen (14), in block Number Three (3) in Wolf's Subdivision of part of Sections Eleven (11) and Fourteen (14) in Township Four (4) North Range Eight (8) West ... Being the same lot Fourteen (14) conveyed to decedent, by deed recorded in book 487 or records at page 268 in said Recorders Office. Being the same real estate described in Deed dated the 20th of July A.D. 1922 from Lee A. WILLCOCKSON and wife to A. W. HELLINGER recorded in book 487 page 268 of the Recorders Office of Madison County, Illinois. Improvements consist of a four-room frame house no encumbrances. Said real estate ... is subj. to a certain contract of sale executed by Andrew W. HELLINGER and Mary R.HELLINGER his wife to Michael DUFFY wherein they agreed to make sale of said real estate to said Michael DUFFY for $2200.00 payable in installments." Transcription of Last Will and Testament

"I, Andrew W. HELLINGER, of the City of Edwardsville, in the County of Madison and the State of Illinois, being of sound mind and memory do make, publish and declare this to be my last will and testament, hereby revoking all other Wills by at any other time heretofore made.
First; It is my wish and will that after my death all my just debts and funeral expenses shall be fully paid.
Second; - All the rest and residue of my Estate Real and Personal or mixed of which I shall die seized and possessed of, or to which I shall be entitled at my decease, I give and bequeath unto my beloved wife, Mary HELLINGER, as her absolute property forever.
Third;- I do nominate and appoint my said wife, Mary HELLINGER to be the Executrix of this my Last Will and Testament, and relieve her from being required to furnish any bond whatsoever.
In Witness Whereof I, the said Andrew W. HELLINGER, have to this my Last Will and Testament consisting of one sheet of paper, subscribed my name, this the 16th day of July A.D. 1935.
