Hermann von Helmholtz was a physician and a renowned scientist in the fields of physics and physiology. Among other breakthroughs he was instrumental in establishing the Young-Helmholtz theory of trichromatic color vision. In physics he is responsible for the partial differential equation Δφ+k²φ=0, also known as Helmholtz equation.[1] The largest German association of research institutions, the Helmholtz-Gemeinschaft Deutscher Forschungszentren, is named after him.[2]

Hermann Ludwig Ferdinand was born in 1821 in Potsdam. He was the son of August Ferdinand Julius Helmholtz and Caroline, née Penne. Hermann married Olga Leopoldine von Velten on 14 Aug 1849 in Berlin.[3] (Alternate marriage date: 26 Aug 1849 in Dahlem near Berlin.[4]) They had the following children:

  • Catharina Caroline Julie Bethie (born 22 Jun 1850),[5][6]
  • Richard Wilhelm Ferdinand (born 28 Sep 1852).[7][8][9][10]
