Biography

Hermann Ludwig Ferdinand was born in 1821 in Potsdam. He was the son of August Ferdinand Julius Helmholtz and Caroline Penne. He married Olga von Velten, 26 Aug 1849 in Dahlem near Berlin.[1] After her death in 1859[2] he married Anna von Mohl, 16 May 1861 in Heidelberg.[3] The German Emperor Wilhelm I awarded Helmholtz on January 27, 1883 hereditary Prussian nobility by letter patent.[4] He died in 1894 in Charlottenburg.
Helmholtz was a physician and a renowned scientist in the fields of physics and physiology. Among other breakthroughs he was instrumental in establishing the Young-Helmholtz theory of trichromatic color vision. In physics he is responsible for the partial differential equation Δφ+k²φ=0, also known as Helmholtz equation.[5] The largest German association of research institutions, the Helmholtz-Gemeinschaft Deutscher Forschungszentren, is named after him.[6]
