Mattie was born about 1876 in North Carolina, the daughter of Daniel W. Helms. In 1880 she was the youngest child living in the household of Mr Helms and his wife Mary J Helms. Also in the household were five older brothers.[1]
Mattie and A J Boyte (sometimes spelled Boyette) were married in Mallard Creek township, Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, on 26 August 1894. The H. L. Helms who provided a certificate and was one of her witnesses[2] may be her brother Henry Lee.[3]
