Basic Usage
Indexed Record
To link to an indexed record on Ancestry, type:

The first number after the pipe (|) is the database name or number. It can be found after the "db=" in the URL of the record, e.g.: https://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=1234&h=5678&indiv=try.The second number after the pipe (|) is the record number. It can be found after the "h=" in the URL of the record, e.g.: https://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=1234&h=5678&indiv=try.

If you use one of the international Ancestry sites, you can add an additional parameter to make sure the link goes to the correct site.

Source Image
To link to an image of a record on Ancestry, type:
The first number after the pipe (|) is the database name or number. It is the first number in the URL of the image, e.g.: https://www.ancestry.com/interactive/1234/5678.
The second number after the pipe (|) is the image number. It is the second number in the URL of the image, e.g.: https://www.ancestry.com/interactive/1234/5678.

Family Tree
To link to a family tree on Ancestry, type:
The first number after the pipe (|) is the tree number. It is the first number in the URL of the tree, e.g.: https://www.ancestry.com/family-tree/person/tree/1234/person/19531917216/facts.
The second number after the pipe (|) is the person number. It is the second number in the URL of the image, e.g.: https://www.ancestry.com/family-tree/person/tree/1234/person/5678/facts. This number may have a dash in front of it -- if it does, include the dash as part of the number.
Note: Many old Ancestry Tree links are written in the format http://trees.ancestry.com/pt/AMTCitationRedir.aspx?tid=1234&pid=5678. In that format, the tid number is the tree number and the pid number is the person number.
Family Tree Media
To link to a picture or document in someone's Ancestry Tree, type:
The first number after the pipe (|) is the tree number. It is the first number in the URL of the media, e.g.: https://www.ancestry.com/family-tree/tree/1234/media/5678.
The second number after the pipe (|) is the media identifier. It is the second number in the URL of the image, e.g.: https://www.ancestry.com/family-tree/person/tree/1234/media/5678.
Many imported Ancestry GEDCOMs and WikiTree files created from Ancestry trees have URLs in older Ancestry formats. These may include media links that look something like http://trees.ancestry.com/rd?f=image&guid=489e7b31-3ba2-4acb-86dc-fbc3a97bec65&tid=17838154&pid=563420771. In that format, the tree number is the number after &tid=, in this example this is 1783815. The media identifier is the number after &guid=. In this example this is 489e7b31-3ba2-4acb-86dc-fbc3a97bec65.
Sharing Link
To link to a public sharing link, type:
The first number after the pipe (|) is the number after "sharing" in the URL of the link, e.g.:

The second number after the pipe (|) is the string that comes after "h=" or "?token=" in the URL of the link, e.g.:
- https://www.ancestry.com/sharing/25304603?h=8b8bd6 (old link format)
- https://www.ancestry.com/sharing/130047?token=fueo0lzU7uYSbCYEezUKuLpE313y4cK2VdcT3PD9vG0%3D. (new link format [2022])
Usage in a Source Citation
All the Ancestry link templates should be used within a source citation giving information about the sources referenced on Ancestry.
Indexed Record
This can easily be done by copying from Ancestry the information under two sections, when you're referencing a record. The first section is titled "Source Information". What you'll get from it looks something like this:
Then you need to copy the information under the section titled "Source Citation". This is important, as it gives the details necessary to find the information again from other places. The information you get should look something like this:
The template with the link should then be placed within the source information:
