Biography

Sallie (Hembree) Love was born in South Carolina.
Sallie was a Field Nurse during the American Civil War, alongside her sisters: Mary and Elizabeth in South Carolina and Georgia for the Confederate soldiers.
Honored for eternity:
In Memoriam

Friends and family called her "Sallie" all of her life. Sallie was born on 19 Jul 1840 in Oconee County, SC., a daughter of Edward Hembree (Emory) and Elizabeth Sanders.[1] When she was seventeen, she married William Augustus Todd (1 Oct 1857).[2] It's possible that the Hembree and Todd families may have been neighbors in Pickens County, South Carolina.

The young couple's marriage lasted only five years. During that time, Sallie's father died, two sons were born, and her husband William died fighting for the Confederacy.

In the meanwhile, Sallie and her sisters, Mary and Elizabeth, did their own duty for the Confederate cause, working as field nurses. Sallie left her two small sons with their grandparents, W.A. and Mary Todd, and tended wounded or sick troops in South Carolina and Georgia. When she learned of her husband’s death, she attempted to retrieve his body after the war, but found the war still going on in western North Carolina in April 1865. She helped the scattered but resisting troops of the Thomas’ Legion (mostly Cherokee) and was tending to sick troops at the battle of Waynesville in May 1865. This is where she met Bud Love, a man of mixed blood. Later, in 1867, she went with a “widows wagon train” from South Carolina to Sevier County, Tennessee, and passed through Waynesville again. Sallie and Bud Love married.[3][4] They had one child and moved to Illinois.[5] After Bud's death, Sallie returned to Knoxville, Tennessee to be near family.[6]
