Grand Detour; born in Shoreham, Addition Co., Vt., May 14, 1819; came to this county 1853; Mr. Hemenway's father, Francis S., born in Grafton, Mass., Jan. 23, 1784, died March 20, 1827; married Miss Clara Turrill; she was born Aug. 31, 1786, died Nov. 17, 1864; they had six children --- one died in infancy; Asa, born July 6, 1810, now living in St. Paul, Minn.; Anna T., born Aug. 4, 1812; Luke E., Aug. 7, 1816; Frances Martha, April 25, 1821; Luke was in the late war, one of the hundred day men; was Captain of a company from Moline, Rock Island Co.; Mr. Francis H. was a School Teacher from the age of 19, three-quarters of his past life; he was School Trustee for 20 years, Supervisor one term; Mr. H. and sister are members of the Congregationalist Church, and Mrs. H.'s father was Deacon for 30 years; Mr. H.'s oldest brother, Asa, and Annie, were missionaries at Siam about ten years.
From "History of Rock Island County", p. 1190: .... Francis was a farmer who moved from Vermont in 1853 and settled in Ogle County, Ill. Ralph Hemenway, the progenitor of the family in America, came to this country from Gloucester, England, about the year 1730 and settled at Roxbury, MA.
From LDS, IGI#P0902, page 3,467, the middle name is Salmon. The mother's name is Martha in this record. Another entry for a child of Samuel Hemenway and Martha gives her last name as Salmon. As the mother's name may be Martha Salmon. "Genealogical Record of the Descendants of Daniel Hemenway of Shrewsbury, MA." published Hartford, CT 1880, page 61 shows Martha Salmon, of Boston, MA early in 1779 and page 62 shows the first four of her 10 children with middle initial S. The 10th also has an S. for middle name abbreviation. Martha survived her husband by 30 years.
IGI #P0902 shows several children for Francis Hemenway and Betsy/Betsey: Betsey Hemenway b 13 Apr 1806 Windsor, Ludlow Twp., VT Annie Hemenway b 24 Mar 1808 " " " Salina Hemenway b 16 Feb 1810 " " " This could be the same Francis Hemenway, but a different marriage. He would have been 24 at the birth of the first of these children. Since Luke was born in 1816, Betsy would be the first wife and Clara the second. !MARR:"Gen.
