Biography

Elsie (Hemingway) Haigh was born in Yorkshire, England.

Elsie Hemingway was born in Halifax on 25 September 1906, the sixth child, and third daughter of George Hemingway and Lucy Jowett^[1] She was baptised four months later, on 27 January 1907. ^[2] Elsie's older siblings were:

• Ellen (1896-1896)
• Albert (1897-aft.1911)
• Edith Ellen (1899-1927)
• Harold (1902-1968)
• Wilfred (1904-1986).

When the census was taken on 2 April 1911, the four-year-old Elsie was living with her parents and siblings at 4 Rocks View, Halifax. This census recorded that Elsie's father was a police constable, and all five children were at school. This census also recorded that her parents had been married for 15 years and that her mother had given birth to six children, one of whom had died.^[3]

In 1926, Banns were published (read out) in St Paul's Church on Sundays 28 November, 5 December and 12 December for the forthcoming marriage of Elsie and Lewis Greenwood Beaumont.^[4] Following publication of the Banns, Elsie and Lewis were married on 25 December 1926.^[5][6] Both Elsie and Lewis signed the register, as did their respective fathers who acted as witnesses.

Elsie and Lewis are known to have had (at least) three children:

• Rita^[7]
• George Greenwood^[8]
• James Greenwood^[9]

On 29 September 1939 a National Register was compiled. This recorded Lewis and Elsie living at 25 Towngate, Brighouse with at least two children (George and Rita).^[10]

Lewis died in 1951^[11] and Elsie then married James Haigh in 1956.^[12]

Elsie died in 2000, in Plymouth.^[13]
