John Franklin Hemmings was born on 26 May 1889 in Dobson, Surry County, North Carolina, to John Tyler Hemmings and Winney Gesella White.[1]
He was married to Mallie P Doby on 19 Dec 1909 in Eldora Township, Surry County, NC.[2] They had three children: Herman Richard Hemmings[3], Perry William Hemmings[4], and Opal Gertrude Hemmings[5].
On the 1910 Census, he was 21 years old and lived with his wife in Dobson Township, Surry County, NC. He was a farm laborer and was able to read and write.[6]
In 1917 or 1918, he registered for the World War I Draft. He was described as slender, medium height, light hair, and blue eyes. He was listed as except from the draft due to being "dependent and disabled".[7]
On the 1920 Census, he was 30 years old and lived with his wife and children in Dobson Township, Surry County, NC. He owned his own farm.[8]
Mallie died in 1920 and he remarried to Rosella Frances Simpson on 22 Apr 1922 in Dobson, Surry County, NC.[9] They had four children: and unnamed infant girl[10], Clinton Franklin Hemmings[11], Mary Lewana Hemmings[12], and John Daniel Hemmings[13]
On the 1930 Census, he was 39 years old and lived with his wife and children in Bethania Township, Forsyth County, North Carolina. He had completed the 6th grade in school.[14]
On the 1940 Census, he was 50 years old and lived with his wife and children in Bethania Township, Forsyth County, NC.[13]
He passed away on 1 Feb 1979 at Lula Conrad Hoots Memorial Hospital in Yadkinville, Yadkin County, North Carolina, and was buried at New Home Church of Christ Cemetery in Dobson, Surry County, NC.[15][16]
