Biography

Hannah Hempstead, daughter of Joshua Hempstead and Elizabeth (Larrabee) Hempstead, was born in New London, Connecticut in 1680.[1] She was baptized in New London on January 30, 1680.[2]

Hannah married John Edgecombe (her step-brother) in New London on February 28, 1699/1700.[3][1][4]

John and Hannah had the following children:

  1. John, b. January 29, 1700/1 (11th month on 1700),[3][5] living in 1727 (based on being mentioned in father's will),[5] may be the John Edgecomb who died in New Hartford in 1772 or may have died by 1736[5]
  2. Nicholas, b. August 10, 1702,[3][5] living in 1727 (based on being mentioned in father's will),[5] d. probably by 1736[5]

  7. Jesse, b. March 27, 1721/2,[6][5] m. Lydia ___ (who married 2d Jonathan Wheeler),[5] d. September 3, 1745[5]

Hannah is mentioned a number of times in the diary of her brother Joshua Hempstead Jr.:

  • February 1735/36: "fryd 27 fair. I was at home foren. aftern at John Cheapels & Sister Edgcumbs to See after Jessee who hath Stole Some flax & Tobacco old Hemp."[8]

Since the last record that mentions Hannah is Joshua Hempstead's diary entry for March 27, 1746 (referenced above), Hannah died sometime after that date.

Even if she had a child by Unknown Curtice (which is possible but very uncertain), there is no hint that they were ever married, so he should not be listed as a spouse/marriage.

I added more entries from Joshua Hempstead Jr.'s diary about his sister Hannah. There are three money amounts quoted which should contain the sign for Pounds, but I just put a capital "L". I'll try to change the "L" to the sign for Pounds later.

Have now changed "L" to £ (for Pounds money).

Thanks, Ken. Fixed her DOD per Hempstead's diary entry.

The ancestry trees showing Hannah died on 19 March 1732 are incorrect (that would be her husband's death).

Hannah was mentioned in Joshua Hempstead's diary as late as 1739. My notes indicate that she may have been alive as late as 1746.
